Initial Configuration

Overview

This guide covers the first configuration steps in Scout Board after UniconOS Management install

Where Settings Are Configured

Recommend settings to be applied either in the base device configuration on the Enterprise OU or through configuration labels and rules. Some features also need a matching component in the ELIAS image.

Add Administrators

Grant Scout Board access to the AD users or groups that will manage UniconOS devices.

1. In the navigation pane, click Security & permissions, then select Manage administrators.

2. Add each AD user or group that requires access and assign the appropriate administrator rights.

Scout Board – Security & permissions > Manage administrators

Create the Initial OU Structure

Organization units (OUs) group devices so they can share a configuration. All OUs are created below the Enterprise top-level OU and inherit its device configuration by default.

1. In the navigation pane, click Devices, then select OU structure.

2. Open the context menu for Enterprise and use Edit to add the child OUs your organization needs

Set Up the Initial Device Configuration

Define the baseline device configuration on the Enterprise OU. Every child OU and device inherits these settings unless it is set to use its own configuration.

1. Under Devices > OU structure, open the context menu for Enterprise and select Device configuration.

2. Click Edit, then clear Use parent device configuration.

3. Configure each section described below, then click Apply to save the configuration.

In the General section, FollowMeDesktop – Request configuration for logged-on users is enabled by default.

FollowMe Desktop makes a user’s applications and desktop settings follow them to whichever UniconOS device they log on to. The configuration comes from the user’s Active Directory (AD) account rather than from the device.

How it works

    • FollowMe configurations are created as OUs under Device management > FollowMe Desktop.
    • Each FollowMe configuration has its own settings (Desktop, Drives, USB, Power management) and its own list of applications.
    • Each configuration is assigned to users with a filter that matches an AD user, group or domain, for example GROUP=Nurses.
    • When a user logs on, the Scout Server checks the user’s AD details. If a FollowMe configuration matches, it replaces the device’s OU configuration.

Note: If no FollowMe configurations are created, this setting has no effect. Disable it if FollowMe Desktop will not be used.

Persistent Home

Persistent Home keeps each user’s settings for selected applications on the device, so they remain after the user signs out and back in or the device restarts. Without it, a UniconOS device starts clean at every logon. It is disabled by default.

Persistent Home can remember a user’s USB audio device selection. (2609+)

Things to know

  • Per device: settings are saved on the device itself. This is separate from FollowMe Desktop, which selects the configuration from the user’s AD account.
  • Factory reset: saved data survives a factory reset. It can only be cleared by a full reinstall that reformats the partitions.
  • Security: if GNOME Keyring is selected on a shared device, saved passwords remain on that device.

Requirement: The Persistent Home feature of the BaseOS eLux package must be selected in the ELIAS image.

Display

Define the default monitor layout, resolution, hide-display hotkeys and screen saver. Settings for individual devices can be adjusted with configuration labels and rules.

Security

Select the user rights available on the device, such as starting and closing applications, logging off, restarting and shutting down. Choose the options that meet your organization’s security requirements.

User Authentication

Leave User authentication set to None in the base configuration. Recommendation is to assign User authentication with configuration labels and rules.

Mirroring

Mirroring lets the helpdesk view and control a device session remotely. Enable mirroring, set a password, and select the session options, such as Log mirror session.

Mirroring – enabled with Log mirror session selected

Requirement: The VNC server extension feature of the X.Org XWindows system package must be selected in the ELIAS image for mirroring to work.

Firmware

Point devices to the ELIAS firmware server. Set the Protocol and Server, then select the container Path (for example elias/container/2607) and the Image file (for example pt2607.idf).

Note: The recommended approach is to set firmware with configuration labels and rules. During testing, devices did not reliably apply updates when firmware was set that way, so it is currently set in the device configuration.

Desktop

Set the desktop language, background, time zone, time server and time format. Enable Show desktop info overlay to display device information on the desktop wallpaper for the helpdesk.

In Desktop Overlay Information, choose the fields to display, for example Device name, IPv4 address, MAC address and Logged in user. Click Preview to check the layout.

Note: The desktop info overlay requires UniconOS Management and UniconOS 2609 or later. Desktop changes apply after the device restarts.

Power Management

Set the low battery notification level and the active power management profile, and choose whether to log off the user before sleep mode. Use Edit profiles and Define working hours to adjust the profiles and schedule.

Advanced device configuration

Advanced file entries let you set individual lines in a device’s configuration files (.ini files) directly from Scout Board. You use them for settings that the normal Device configuration tab doesn’t show.

  • wfclient.ini → WFClient → WCAGModeKeyCombination = true: The Linux VDA introduces a toolbar in 2408 and later. This has a default hotkey of Ctrl+Shift+T (which is also the hotkey to reopen a closed tab in Edge and Chrome). This disabled that hotkey.
  • terminal.ini → UsbAudioClass → InputMute = false: Stops USB headset microphones starting muted.
  • terminal.ini → Global → ActionAfterLastWfica = 1: sets what the device does after the user closes their last Citrix session, such as restarting. This is mainly used for kiosk type mode. The Rules also control what the device if there is an interactive setup.
